3G Development in China October 5-11

- At ITU Telecom World 2009 held from October 5-9, 2009, China Mobile confirmed that the company will complete the construction of a trial network based on TD-LTE (Time Division-Long Term Evolution) in May 2010, to be located in the Shanghai Expo Park, the Sohu IT News reported on October 8. China Mobile stated that the company will deploy 15 TD-LTE base stations for the imminent Shanghai 2010 World Expo. Further details regarding which vendor will deploy TD-LTE base stations, however, were not yet disclosed.

 

- Shanghai Telecom, a subsidiary of China Telecom in Shanghai, has completed the test and verification of a 3G network based on EVDO (Evolution Data Only) Rev.B solutions, Xinhua News reported on October 10. Equipped with the solutions supplied by Alcatel-Lucent, the network's data transmission speed is expected to be three times faster than the existing trial commercial network, which was launched in March with its network coverage including all urban and rural areas of Shanghai three months later. Meanwhile, Alcatel Lucent is projected to conduct field tests of the EVDO Rev. B in a bid to help China Telecom deliver advanced CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) services in time for the World Expo 2010 Shanghai, according to the same source.
